About the Project

This project was a new jail facility that is approximately 45,000 square feet.  The facility was designed to house 96 inmates and included laundry and kitchen facilities, transport, exercise, and multipurpose areas.  The facility also included offices for Sheriff’s Department, Game Warden, DPS, Justice of the Peace, Court Rooms, as well as an Emergency Operations Center.  A separate Road and Bridge Maintenance Facility, water pump station, and septic field was also included as part of this project.

The Mechanical system was designed with a chill water system utilizing both a Constant Volume (CV) and Variable Air Volume (VAV) system.  Two high efficient 80 ton air cooled chillers with an environmentally friendly refrigerant were used.  A primary pumping system with variable speed drives were designed to reduce energy cost during off peak hours.  A constant volume system was designed for the detention area while a VAV system was designed for the office area. Telco closets were provided with Direct Expansion cooling units.  A nine (9) zone Smoke Exhaust System was designed to comply with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.  The plumbing system was designed with vandal proof detention grade fixtures.  Tempered water was provided to all lavatories and showers.  A 95% high efficient boiler was designed to provide hot water for the detention area, while several 96% efficient water heaters were designed for use in the kitchen and administration area.

The Electrical system was designed as a 3000amp service with an operating voltage of 277/480V, 3 Phase, 4 Wire.  The main electrical service was designed for future growth of the facility.  Lighting was designed using T8/32W fluorescent lamps.  A 750KVA/600KW diesel, emergency back-up generator was also designed to provide back-up power to only the critical operating equipment as well as all life safety components (i.e. egress lights, 911 equipment, communications equipment, Intercom equipment, certain receptacles, fire protection equipment, and the smoke exhaust system).

Special Systems included Lightning Protection, Intercom, CCTV, Secured Electronics, Fire Alarm, and Smoke Exhaust System.
